The practice of Qi-gong is one of total balance of the body, mind and spirit to preserve, protect and propagate healing. Although there are thousands of movements, each practitioner will use the basic components of their instruction. Qi-gong consists of postures, movements, breathing techniques and mental exercises. These can include standing, sitting or lying down. It includes stretching, slow motions, quick thrusts, jumping or bending. Each posture and movement are designed to strengthen, stretch and tone the body and to improve the flow of energy. Breathing techniques can include deep abdominal breathing, chest breathing, relaxed breathing or holding breaths.
Meditation and cognitive exercises can be used to move qi throughout the body. Most of this type of exercise is visualization to focus on points in the body, specific words, created ideas, objects or energy flow through the meridians.
Discipline, as with any healing practice is a vital component of qi-gong. Once a routine of exercise is learned, it is to be completed daily, in the morning and again in the evening. Each exercise session will have a beginning and an ending point to complete the flow of energy. This is not a time consuming regime of exercise. Beginners may start at 15 minutes in the morning and again at the evening time of choice. Starting a class in Qi-gong? I recommend that you take two sessions per week as a beginner, then practice at home both morning and night.
The Benefits of practicing Qi-gong are as variable as each individual; however, I have found that there are a few categories that will help you define the beneficial aspects.
Qi-Gong is beneficial in curing illness and promoting health, enhancing vitality and developing internal energy flow (life force), it promotes youthfulness and longevity, it will allow expanding of the mind and intellect, and is spiritually cultivating.
Qi-Gong is the promotion of health. A proactive way to keep your body, mind and spirit in perfect balance and disallows “dis-ease” to get a foothold.
